National Rent-to-Own Home Furnishing Franchise
A national rent-to-own franchise experienced an abrupt crisis when their IT Director/Developer, who had single-handedly created all of their custom systems, resigned without notice and left no documentation. The company faced immediate operational risks with 54 undocumented SQL Server databases and thousands of obsolete VBScript programs supporting critical business functions. Additionally, the company lacked a formal IT department or disaster recovery protocols, and needed a strategy to provide franchisees with competitive and customer behavior intelligence.
As Interim CIO, I implemented a comprehensive crisis recovery and transformation strategy: 1) Emergency Stabilization: Rapidly analyzed and documented the entire technical environment, prioritized and triaged operations, and established disaster recovery protocols. 2) IT Organization Development: Architected new IT organizational structure, implemented Agile DevOps methodology, and led recruiting of virtual development team. 3) Application Modernization: Created product roadmaps, directed team on high-priority redevelopment, and implemented modern development standards. 4) Data Strategy Implementation: Presented on data analytics at Annual Franchisee Conference, developed SaaS prototype to deliver competitive intelligence, and integrated with on-premises Versirent Retail Software databases.
Crisis Management: Documented 54 SQL Server databases and thousands of VBScript programs within 2 weeks, completed triage of operations within 3 weeks, and implemented disaster recovery protocols within 1 month. Organizational Development: Successfully established new IT organization with functional Agile DevOps team. Business Intelligence: Delivered valuable insights into rental trends, product profitability, and consumer preferences by region. Strategic Vision: Provided franchisees with data-driven competitive intelligence through integrated SaaS application.
