Global 100 Marine Diesel Engine Distributor — Project 2 of 4 · Emergency SCM Intervention (2005–2006)
Client Challenge
Volvo Penta’s IPS — the Inboard Performance System of steerable, forward-facing, counter-rotating pod drives launched in January 2005 — revolutionized the boat industry, and the company was unprepared for the demand spike from early adoption by yacht builders
A critical engine shortage threatened market share; there was no formal SCM planning, no PMO, and no inventory controls
Client Solution
Executive Discovery: Discovery sessions with the CEO and Executive Leadership Team; stood up the PMO and assembled the matrix team
Rapid Analysis: Identified the critical SCM deficiencies; implemented warehouse inventory planning and control procedures with KPIs for immediate shortage resolution
SIOP Framework: Designed and implemented the Customer Demand & Global SCM Planning SIOP framework; designed and developed a JDE bolt-on application for the weekly SIOP process
Organization: Created new Inventory Manager and Planner roles with SOPs; trained employees; educated the Executive Leadership Team on global SCM best practices
Client Impact Results
Global supply chain of marine engines stabilized in under 2 months by institutionalizing WMS protocols
Long-term sole-sourcing strategy to OEMs secured in under 6 months via European supplier agreements and formal SIOP
Client Technologies
JDE EnterpriseOne 8.12 (PDM, Inventory, Forecasting, DRP, Procurement, Sales Orders, MRP, Advanced Pricing, Supplier Scheduling)
Custom JDE weekly-SIOP bolt-on; S&OP graphical analysis application
Global SCM and WMS protocols; PMO stand-up
We were pleasantly surprised with the complete business approach.
